TITLE: BIRTHDAY PARTY COORDINATOR
DATE: April 11, 2008
POSITION DESCRIPTION:
The Birthday Party Coordinator plays a key role in carrying out the Museum’s commitment to providing outstanding customer service. He/she does so by promoting, selling, scheduling and staffing the Museum’s birthday party room for functions that: (1.) provide a high quality, memorable Museum experience for children and families and (2.) generate revenues to support Museum programs and operations. As such, the Birthday Party Coordinator position plays a key role as an ambassador for the Museum to families and outside constituencies, providing timely accurate information in person, over the phone and through e-mail, orienting clients and prospective clients to the Museum, proactively anticipating and addressing client needs and responding to any issues or emergencies. This individual is also responsible for ensuring that birthday parties operate smoothly and efficiently and provide a positive, welcoming Museum experience.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- High school diploma or equivalent; some college preferred
- Minimum of one year event planning experience, including promotion and/or marketing experience
- Strong customer service skills
- Previous experience managing a budget and collecting fees
- Strong computer skills
- Ability to engage with children and adults in a welcoming energetic, friendly, outgoing, and professional manner
- Ability to react positively to rapidly changing circumstances
- Ability to work with staff and public from diverse backgrounds
- Proven ability to work independently
- Proven ability to prioritize multiple demands and deadlines
- Proven ability to make mature, quick judgments under stress
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills

TITLE: EXHIBIT INTERPRETER
DATE: April 17, 2008
POSITION DESCRIPTION:
Boston Children’s Museum seeks dynamic individuals with strong presentation skills, a commitment to informal education and experience leading experiential-learning programs for families and school/community groups. Reporting to the Education and Programs Director, the Exhibit Interpreter is responsible for leading a variety of programs in the areas of environmental and physical science, health & fitness, literacy, cultural education, and the arts. The Exhibit Interpreter works closely with Senior Educators on implementation of programs and serves as a role model of positive, proactive and informed visitor engagement.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree in education or related field strongly preferred. Directly relevant work experience may be substituted for education.
- Teaching experience or coursework in education and/or family learning preferred.
- Ability to simultaneously engage children and adults in an energetic, friendly, positive, and professional manner
- Ability to effectively engage visitors with, different learning styles.
- Ability to react positively to a rapidly changing environment.
- Must be comfortable leading interactive presentations and role-playing in a group setting.
- Must be comfortable and competent working with and teaching diverse, intergenerational audiences as well as non-English speakers and people with disabilities
- Ability to work with staff from diverse backgrounds.
- Theatrical or other performance experience a plus
- Fluency in multiple languages a plus.
- Proven ability to respond and make good decisions under pressure

TITLE: GREEN AND ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE PROGRAM FELLOW
DATE: April 24, 2008
POSITION DESCRIPTION:
The Green Program Fellow is responsible for working with the Science Program Manager to develop an annual calendar of children’s events to inspire kids and their families to lead green lifestyles. These will include daily activities within existing exhibits for the general public; integrated with the cultural, arts, science, health and early childhood events at the museum; education programs that support the Massachusetts state learning standards for school groups; “Green Fairs” at the Museum for families; and outreach programs to be conducted in community settings. The Fellow will also be our liaison to key partners in the field of Environmental Stewardship. This position will play a key role in establishing the Museum as a leader in children’s understanding of the environment and their role in helping protect it. The position also plays a key role in meeting the Museum’s goal of being the best possible urban children’s museum by designing programs, events and celebrations that reflect Greater Boston’s changing demographics. Successful candidates will be dynamic and fun-loving with strong leadership and coaching skills, a commitment to Museum education, and experience designing dynamic, engaging environmental education programs.
This two-year fellowship is sponsored by the FAO Schwarz Family Foundation and is designed for recent college graduates who aspire to be future leaders in the education and youth development field. The goal is to provide Fellows with experiences, training and mentorship to help them succeed in these fields.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- BA/BS with background in environmental education
- Knowledge of current research and national trends in environmental awareness and green living
- Ability to conceptualize, develop and implement short- and long-range program plans
- A solid grounding in the theory and practice of hands-on, inquiry-based museum education programs
- An understanding of best practices in environmental awareness and green living for varied age groups
- A thorough understanding of children’s emotional, intellectual, and social development from birth to age 10
- Excellent communication skills - both oral and written
- Excellent interpersonal and leadership skills with the ability to interact effectively with a variety of people from different backgrounds and cultures
- Ability to prioritize multiple demands and deadlines in a fast-paced environment
- Ability to manage and motivate staff and knowledge of customer service principles
- Must be self-directed, highly organized, creative problem-solver with excellent follow-through
- Museum experience preferred.
- Fluency in Spanish, Creole, or other languages desirable
HOURS: 35 hours per week, may include weekend hours. Fellowship begins in July 2008 with an anticipated end date of July 2010.

TITLE: PUBLIC RELATIONS MANAGER
DATE: April 22, 2008
POSITION DESCRIPTION:
Reporting to the Director of Marketing and Public Relations (DM&PR), the Public Relations Manager assists with implementing the annual strategic public relations plan that reinforces the Museum’s image and delivers cohesive positioning messages to key constituencies. S/he assists DM&PR with media events; handles press, public information and visitor inquiries; and manages and maintains media databases. Responsible for maintaining press kits and calendar listings; tracks and maintains press clips archive. The PR Manager will develop and maintain comprehensive public information/photography/video materials about the Museum and its initiatives, as well as serve as copywriter/editor of Museum-related materials and publications. Assists DM&PR with local/ national/ international dignitaries and celebrities to ensure positive public interface, and facilitates overall external public communication/information.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelors degree in Journalism, Communications or related field
- One to two years related professional experience
- Demonstrated results in the positioning and achieving of local and national media coverage
- Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills
- Operates well in a team environment and under deadline
- Well-organized, detail-oriented
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office database applications, Media Map/other media/communications-related software and working knowledge of photography
HOURS: Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm. Evening/weekend phone access and occasional evening/weekend work required for special meetings, events or to meet deadlines.

TITLE: VISITOR SERVICES ASSOCIATE

POSITION DESCRIPTION:
The Visitor Service Associate (VSA) role is essential in ensuring a welcoming, safe, and enjoyable visit for the museum’s visitors. The VSA staffs exhibits, activities, and admissions, focusing on customer service, visitor engagement, and operations. The VSA is the front line for services such as greeting visitors, answering questions, acknowledging visitor comments and concerns, and providing a quality experience for all visitors. This position is dependent upon the ability to learn and communicate efficiently, cash register skills, strong multi-tasking, the ability to work and think quickly under pressure, and the ability to engage visitors of all ages. The VSA contributes to the museum’s customer service mission, ensuring a quality experience in a polite, engaging, and professional manner.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- High school diploma or equivalent. BA/BS or some college preferred
- Must have strong customer service skills
- Previous cash handling experience preferred
- Excellent interpersonal, and communication skills
- Experience working with children and families
- Ability to engage children and adults in an energetic, friendly, positive, and professional manner

TITLE: VISITOR SERVICES SENIOR MANAGER

POSITION DESCRIPTION:
Boston Children’s Museum seeks a dynamic, energetic individual who can lead full and part-time entry-level staff. This position is responsible for supervising and coordinating the work of Visitor Service Associates to insure that the Museum’s front desk, information desk, and lobby operate smoothly and efficiently and provide a positive, welcoming first impression of the Museum. The position assists the Director, Visitor Services with hiring, training and supervising the Museum’s visitor services staff. The goal of this position is to create a work environment defined by respect, excellence, communication, community, and fun. The position plays a key role in enhancing the Museum’s role as an urban children’s museum by ensuring that front line staff are capable of delivering on the Museum’s informal education mission as well as being sensitive to and reflective of Greater Boston’s changing demographics.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- BA/BS with background in customer service, retail, museums or related field preferred. Prior staff training and supervision experience, demonstrated ability to foster a positive, productive work environment, and a dedication to creating and maintaining a strong customer service culture
- Prior cash handling experience.
- Proven ability to motivate and maintain staff morale and team spirit
- Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work well in an intergenerational, multicultural setting
