Presidents Letter

We are open! Boston Children’s Museum reopened on April 14, 2007 as the first green museum in the City of Boston. We have received enthusiastic visitor feedback resulting in record-breaking attendance.

In fiscal year 2007, the Museum completed its most dramatic changes since moving in 1979 to the Fort Point Channel. With a three-story glass and light filled expansion to an entire renovation of the existing Museum spaces, visitors have marveled at the changes we have made. Right from the moment you walk in, kids and most parents are left speechless at the New Balance three-story vertical climbing maze that soars over 30 feet in the center of the new Museum.

An exciting part of our project has been incorporating sustainable design into the building and becoming Boston’s first green museum. The Museum made the decision to lead by example and introduce children to ways that they could grow up as good stewards of the environment. Recycling played a large role in both materials being removed from the old building, now the Yawkey Center for Children and Learning, and materials being used in the addition. We made a commitment to protecting our place on the Fort Point Channel by building a stormwater reclamation system that captures and reuses stormwater that falls on the site, and over 3,000 planters - Boston Children’s Museum exists to help children understand and enjoy the world in which they live. As an early museum experience for children, our environment is informal, but our purpose is serious. We want children to grow up feeling secure and self-confident with respect for others and the natural world. We encourage imagination, curiosity, questioning and realism; we provide opportunities for new insights, involvement with the world and understanding of human differences. Central to our philosophy is the belief that real objects, direct experiences and enjoyment support learning.some of which were planted by children visiting the Museum - now cover nearly 6,000 square feet of green roof.

It has been a tremendous year in the history of Boston Children’s Museum, and we thank everyone - donors, visitors, educators, staff - for making it such as success.
