Dress, made by Gladys Widdiss, Aquinnah, 1977

Jessie Fermino chose the dress because "the nice thing about animal skin is you're wearing the earth. It is not wasteful and it breathes. Natural skins breathe. People think you're hot in that regalia in the summer, but you're not. And it smells so nice because it smells like home - it reminds me of my people."

This dress was made by Gladys Widdiss, Aquinnah Wampanoag. The design represents an important piece of Wampanoag culture -- the wild cranberry, which is Gladys's native name. This is one of the styles of regalia still worn at Pow Wow.
