Welcome to the Japanese House! Walk down the street, take off your
shoes, and step into an authentic two-story silk merchant's home from
Kyoto, Japan.
Explore every corner of this fully-equipped Japanese House reconstructed
in Boston by Japanese carpenters. Discover Japanese family life,
customs, ceremonies, art, architecture and seasonal events in the fully
functional 100-year-old house inside the Museum.
This House was a gift to the City of Boston from the City of Kyoto on
the 20th Anniversary of their sister city relationship in 1979. We are
very lucky to have this Japanese House in Boston. Very few exist now
even in Japan.
WE HAVE THE TATAMI MATS – traditional Japanese floor in the Japanese House!
26 tatami artisans from Japan came to Boston on September 6 & 7, 2008
and repaired our tatami mats in the Japanese House. Most of them came to
Boston at their own expense and volunteered their work simply to see
people in Boston enjoying, experiencing and learning about the Japanese
tatami floor.
The mats are green and have wonderful grassy aroma!
Don't miss out on all the fun!
