What is Hambone? Where does the name come from, and what is the significance and meaning of these words? Why was Hambone created? Learn about the history and art of Hambone, and its evolution from Africa to modern North America with acclaimed hambone performer Derique McGee.Derique teaches Hambone body percussion workshops throughout the U.S. and internationally. Additionally, he has been an artist in residence with Oakland, California’s Prescott CircusTheater for the last 23 years, teaching Hambone and circus skills to local youth. His performing experience also includes opening for renowned entertainers such as Lou Rawls, Sammy Davis Jr.and the Temptations.



This program is in partnership with BAMSFest. Boston Art & Music Soul (BAMS) Fest strives to break down racial and social barriers to arts, music, and culture for marginalized communities of color across Greater Boston.
