Boston Children’s Museum Appoints Vice President of Development

November 5, 2019
Mike Travis Will Lead the Museum’s Fundraising and Donor Engagement Programs
Boston Children’s Museum announces the appointment of Mike Travis as Vice President of Development. Mike brings 15 years of progressive resource and organizational development experience as a fundraiser at the local, regional and national levels. In Mike’s new role, his primary focus will be to design and implement a dynamic development program that will power and sustain the next generation of innovation at the Museum.

Most recently, Mike served as Senior Philanthropy Officer at Boys & Girls Clubs of America, overseeing all aspects of individual giving, major gifts and planned-giving for the largest youth agency in America, serving 4.7 million youth annually at more than 4,600 Club facilities nationwide in rural communities, urban neighborhoods, schools and public housing, on Native lands and on U.S. military installations worldwide.

“We are thrilled to welcome Mike to our team,” said Carole Charnow, President & CEO. “He brings with him not only many years of fundraising experience, but the national perspective we need to accelerate our important work with children and families. In addition, Mike will be a terrific mentor and colleague for our accomplished staff. We are very lucky to have him join us!”

Prior to Boys & Girls Clubs of America, Mike worked for a national nonprofit consulting firm managing a program that generated qualified leads for major gift officers while using sophisticated modeling and data overlay services to identify top prospects. In his career as a frontline fundraiser, he earned a reputation for forging relationships needed to bring together many diverse communities including medicine, technology, business, academia, research, human services and community stakeholders. Mike has worked in senior level development positions at large healthcare and human service organizations with budgets ranging from $3 - $100M+ annually.

“At Boys & Girls Clubs, I heard from kids and teens on an ongoing basis that they crave face-to-face interactions in the “real world” away from technology with caring adults that inspire and challenge them to explore, learn, dream big, and ultimately achieve a great future,” said Mike Travis. “That is exactly what Boston Children’s Museum does for kids in the Greater Boston Community on a daily basis, and I am ecstatic to join the Museum at a time when its mission has never been more critical. Philanthropy is the engine that fuels the Museum’s mission to serve children and families, and I am honored to bring my skills and experience to further ignite Boston Children’s Museum’s vision to create the children’s museum of the 21st century.”

Mike is a graduate of the University of Massachusetts Amherst with a Bachelor of Science in Journalism, Certificate in Fundraising Management from IUPUI Lilly School of Philanthropy and is actively pursuing his Masters in Nonprofit Management from Northeastern University. Mike resides in Scituate with his husband, Jimmy, and 9-year-old daughter, Gemma.

Mike joined Boston Children’s Museum on October 14.
